About Us

Who we are

We are the family and friends of persons affected by brain disorders, also known as mental illnesses.  NAMI MC is affiliated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and NAMI Texas.  Persons with brain disorders, their families, friends and concerned professionals are active members of our organization.  We welcome you to attend monthly meetings, support groups and other activities sponsored by NAMI MC.  We serve as partners to impact change for the improvement of quality of life for all persons affected by severe brain disorders, also known as mental illness, through education, support and advocacy.

How we can help

  • Assurance we are not alone, not to blame;
  • Self-help by sharing common concerns, mutual encouragement and practical advice;
  • Information about existing mental health care, sources of help in crises, community services and available resources;
  • Knowledge about causes, symptoms, treatment of brain disorders and ways we can overcome despair and isolation;
  • Education to overcome stigma and to secure a valued place in our community for persons affected by brain disorders;
  • Newsletters and meetings; and
  • Telephone contact with a caring person who has experienced similar concerns.

What we offer
NAMI MC offers free education workshops for persons (peers) with brain disorders, their families and friends and for the young parents/caregivers of children/adolescents affected by brain disorders.

Separate support groups are offered for persons (peers) with brain disorders, families/friends of adults, and young parents/caregivers of children and adolescents.

Additionally, we provide speakers throughout the community to impact change for persons affected by mental illness, their families, friends and our community.

NAMI Montgomery County believes that

Working together we can improve the quality of life for persons affected with brain disorders, also known as mental illness;
Family members and friends are important resources in the treatment of serious brain disorders;
To be effective, persons need support, education and involvement; and
by attending monthly meetings on the last Tuesday evening of each month, you will receive information about the most recent happenings on the local, state and national level.

NAMI MC’s meetings are open to the community.

Our goals are to reach out to others, providing emotional support, insight into brain disorders and how to more effectively cope with its impact on the family and friends, and to reduce the stigma.

NAMI MC seeks to provide a place to confront fears, a place for validation, and a place to learn and gain understanding of how a brain disorder affects the family and community.  We let others know they are not alone.  We offer hope and give people an opportunity to be helpful to others.
